Questions about Reid

Gentleman (and ladies), greetings from New Zealand. I hope all is well in the Wolf Pit. I'm sure you'd like to be higher up the table challenging for a European spot, but it doesnt look like it this year.

In NZ we are now curious about Winston Reid, given his decision to make himself available to play for us at the World Cup. He will certainly be included in the squad and hopefully plays well for us for many years.

But it would be good to hear some Danish opinion on Reid. You guys have watched him countless times. Even our national team coach has never seen him play! So, ive got a couple of questions?

1. Can he play at right back? It looks like Reid tends to play at centre back for FCM. We actually have quite a few decent centre-backs, including Ryan Nelsen, the Blackburn Rovers skipper and others who have played in the Eredivise and Championship in the UK plus others in the MLS and Australia. But we have nobody of any quality who can play at right back. It has been suggested that Reid could fill that gap for us (as well as provide an option for us at centre back), but nobody here really knows if he has played much at right back in a 442. What do you think? Could he play there for NZ?

2. How good is Reid? What are Reid's prospects long term? Do you seem him staying at FCM?

well without knowing a lot to your centre backs, I think it's a great win for you. He can become a very great player.

1. I dont think he should play right back. He is made for playing in the centre back. He is tall, but it is also important that he has a experienced player to play with experince. Becuase he needs some experince on the highest plane.

2. I dont think he will be here for more than 2 years, because he is very talented, and some italian clubs has already been looking for him. If you known Simon Kjaer i think winston can becom as good as him, if he keeps evolving.

IMO Reid is no where near fast enough to play the position of full back...

I would describe him as a typical centre back who is quite dominant in the danish league in the air and a decent tackle whereas he has some issues in open play, which you would also expect from a "young" player like lack of concentration, problems regarding positioning and the like.

But without knowing much about the NZ national team I would say he will be a boost - if not now, then in a few years

I wish you and Ried good luck, thers no question that it is the right move for him, as his possition in the Danish team is filled with top international players.

I think it would be wrong to use Ried in any possition exept af Center back. It is his aggressive stile, one on one play and speed that makes him good, but it is his ability in the air that stands him apart from other players.

Ried need to learn to keep his temper i check, and clear guidelins for who decides what on the pitch. He is an natural leader, an will take this role if thers a chance, or if no one else makes a claim. But it is not yet somthing he can do whitout it influencing his game.

Thanks guys. Really helpful. Sounds like it would be a risk playing him as a full back/right back. He may still be tried there bc we are desperate to find somebody who can do that job. Otherwise, we will have to play a 3-5-2, and Reid will compete for one of the 3 centre-back roles.

By "strip" I meant playing shirt. Its great! Very impressed.

I hope FCM have a strong finish to the season and good luck to Denmark in South Africa. I will be there so Ill keep an eye out for anybody in an FCM shirt.

1. In my opinion absolutely not! He's a typical centre back and he's - as someone else has already mentioned - not fast enough to play the right back position. Furthermore, it would be a shame not to use his physical strength in the goal field position battles and his obvious skills in heading (don't know if that's the correct English term but surely, you get the meaning). Reid very rarely loses a duel in the air.

2. I do not see him in FCM for long. He's being heavily scouted by Italian clubs and if he makes a good impression at the WC for you guys, I don't expect him to be in FCM next season. Although an important player for us, he’s not irreplaceable as we have a lot of talented defensive players coming from our youth academy.

Regarding Reid’s long term prospects I’m fairly convinced that he will be an international player and will be able to handle himself in e.g. Serie A, Premier League, etc. However, this is entirely up to him as he needs to improve his checking and his ability to stay focused for 90+ minutes. He is infamous in FCM for losing his head 1 or 2 times every match. In all fairness it should be mentioned that he has already improved in this area since centre back partner Albrechtsen arrived approximately ½ year ago.

All in all I would expect you guys to benefit from having Reid in the squad. So good luck during the world cup .

Hello and welcome

As the other guys mention Reid is a decent centre back. He's dominant in the air and his physical strenght is remarkable ( 90 kilos pure evil ). He has an acceptable speed, but is imo definetely not fast enough to be a great right back.
Reid is of course still young (21 years old) and his lack of experience sometimes results in some rather stupid mistakes. However since the experienced danish centre back Martin Albrechtsen arrived his mistakerate has dropped a lot, and he has been one of our best perfoming players in the spring so far.
I'm absolutely sure that Reid is being sold to a club in one of the big european leagues (most likely Italia) within the next 2 years. He's one of our biggest talents, and even though he's already perfoming well he will be even better when he gets more experience!

-After following FCM and Reid for many years I would like to make some objective comments on Reid's skills and position and I am sure he will strengthen your team after seeing some of the All Whites WC qualifying games.
-Reid has a lot of experience and has already played 88 games for the A-team and would have played +100 if it wasn't for a knee ingury in the first game in 2009, which kept him out the whole spring season.
-Reid has a natural talent for positioning himself on the pitch and is very strong "one on one" (a general attribute for FCM players) and he seems to lift himself to a higher level when playing important games such as EUFA Cup.
-He has a strong winning attitude and he gives more than 100%, hence sometimes it happens that he becomes to aggresive (he just wants to win), but I do not see this as a negative attribute as most international players have this winning attitude and we see them making wrong judgements. (Beyond what we have seen from Reid).
-As mentioned his strength is centre back but he is also used as attacker in all standard situations like corners, as well as moved up front as target man the last 10-15 minutes if the team is losing. This counts both for FCM and the Danish youth team.
-I have seen Reid play a few games for the Danish U21 team as right back and this he managed well, but the first half he was a little too defensive for a modern right back, but this was corrected in second half and he made some good runs and passes into the goal area.
-I would say he can play a right back but his talent and skills will be far better utilized as centre back.

All the best for the World Cup and imagine if the All Whites come 2nd in their group and Denmark wins their group, New Zealand and Denmark will meet in the 16th final, which I find an interesting thought.
